Sacraments of the Catholic Church
The Sacraments are signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us.
The Catholic Church recognizes seven sacraments. The 5th century theologian St. Augustine called them, "the outward signs of an inward grace." The sacraments are further divided into three types. The Sacraments of Christian Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. The Sacraments of Healing are Penance and Anointing of the Sick. The Sacraments of Service are Matrimony and Holy Orders.
